I recently went to the theater to see a show a friend directed. He really wanted me to go and I did want to support him. Plus, the reviews were great!
Well, I went. It was late and the production just didn't hold my attention. Add the fact that the guy seated next to me as really rather large and I felt scrunched. Well, it wasn't the best environment.
I fell asleep because it just didn't hold my attention -- even with all of the "distractions." Then, because it ran long, I had to leave so I didn't miss my train.
It was not a good evening.
This morning, my friend called -- waiting for the full-throttle compliments. I didn't criticize the show but used polite hedging/finessing. "It was interesting." "The characters were full of life." I loved the set. The audience was really into it. There were some great lines. The directing was awesome. So glad I supported you.
He seemed to accept this and I felt good that I didn't give away the real problems I had with the show.
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do in the name of friendship.
